Blip in Federal Wage Data Points To Ripple Effect of Facebook's IPO

It isn't very often that the actions of a single company register in national economic statistics, but Facebook Inc.'s (FB) 2012 initial public offering appears to have hit the mark.
The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last week that the average weekly wage in San Mateo County, Calif., in last year's fourth quarter rose an astounding 107% from a year earlier to 3,240. That's the equivalent of $168,000 a year, and more than 50% higher than for the next-place finisher, New York County (better known as Manhattan), which came in at $2,107 a week, or roughly $110,000 a year.
What's behind the numbers? The Labor Department doesn't discuss specific employers but several clues point to Facebook, which is based in Menlo Park Calif. part of San Mateo County.
The county's wage surge was included in a detailed report on employment and wages for each of the nation's more than 3,000 counties, based on reports filed by employers. Within San Mateo County, the industry that most stands out is what the government labels "computer systems design services.
According to the Labor Department, the roughly 6,200 workers in San Mateo County in that industry group collected total wages of $6.8 billion in the fourth quarter alone. That's an average of $82,891 a week, or roughly 4.3 million a year.
Those weren't regularly weekly paychecks, of course. That's because the department's definition of wages can include bonuses, stock and stock options, according to David Hiles, a supervisory economist there.
That's where Facebook's May 2012 IPO comes in. According to the social network's securities filings, the bulk of restricted stock units that Facebook issued before 2011 vested six months after the IPO, in November 2012. In one filing, Facebook said it withheld and paid taxes of $2.86 billion when those units vested in 2012. In a previous filing, it said it expected to withhold taxes at roughly a 45% rate suggesting the shares were valued at more than $6 billion at the time. Facebook employees also exercised roughly 51 million stock options in the fourth quarter which might have added $1 billion to the "wage" total.
Doug Henton, chief executive of Collaborative Economics, a San Mateo, Calif., consulting firm that has worked with the detailed county reports for more than two decades, agreed that the signs pointed to Facebook as the source of the county's growing wealth. That kind of a jump can only be explained by what's happening with stoc and stock options from recent IPOs Mr. Henton said. "It will be interesting to see if that wealth bump is reflected in giving back to the community.
The Labor Department's Mr. Hiles said the quarterly wage numbers tend to fluctuate, reflecting the payout of bonuses on Wall Street, for example. Prior department reports also have highlighted the impact of corporate mergers and acquisitions.
A Facebook spokeswoman declined to comment.

Miley Cyrus Loves Her Short Shorts

During her performance on the comic's late night show Miley looked like a sexy circus performer as she belted her catchy summer tune "We Can't Stop" alongside Will.I.Am. And we definitely can't stop looking at that outfit.

What's furry, loves New York, and has killer abs? Miley Cyrus! The pop princess left Jimmy Kimmel Live earlier this week in a striking pair of furry white shorts and thigh-high Louboutin boots. Most people would be shocked by this saucy ensemble, but after checking out her other short shorts fashion statements, you'll quickly learn that she's just bein' Miley.
Long before the former Hannah Montana star chopped her locks, she was experimenting with slashing the length of her cutoffs. Cyrus stepped out in London in a set of grey jean shorts, a flowing white T-shirt a boho chic robe, and black heels.
There's no denying it. The former Disney queen has an enviable bod. Cyrus showed off her tiny waist and gorgeous gams in a pair of high-waisted denim shorts as she strutted into a recording studio in Miami.
There are two things one needs when pumping gas: super hot heels and even hotter shorts. Cyrus saddled up to the pump in both, reminding us that not only is she grown up enough to have a license, but she's old enough to rock the revealing number.
It's take your daughter to work day ... kinda. Miley donned a tiny pair of hot shorts, a T-shirt, a leopard print headband, and a black leather jacket when she and her sweetie, Liam Hemsworth, attended her Dad's concert.
It looks like Miley didn't want to mess with Michael Jordan, so she just let his jersey (and her barely-visible bottoms!) do the talking. The "We Can't Stop" singer finished off her risqué daytime ensemble with a backwards baseball cap and a pair of Yves Saint Laurent striped, ankle-strap, high-heel sandals. Huh.
The Tennessee-born songstress got back to her country roots in a pair of jean shorts and a floral crop top. Had she swapped the combat boots for cowgirl boots, this look would have been adorable.
The pop star made a quick trip to Bed, Bath & Beyond in Studio City with her Starbucks in hand and legs on full display. Her ensemble makes sense because everyone wears studded black jean shorts, garters, and boots to shop for home goods, right.
It's all about comfort when you're shopping in New York City, so the "Climb" singer kept her look easy (and super breezy!) with miniscule denim shorts, a black T-shirt, a camouflage jacket, and combat boots. The look was edgy and definitely fashion-forward.
It looks like Tupac has been resurrected. The platinum-blonde songbird rocked his T-shirt (and not much else!) on her way to Kimmel's show earlier in the day. She finished off her look with a pair of studded heels
